Species Information

General:
Perennial herb from a fleshy underground stolon, in the fall producing basal leafy-rosettes, at first almost sessile, later terminating short, above-ground leafy stolons; stems erect, 30-60 (90) cm tall, branching above, nearly round, glandular-hairy above, with soft, short, spreading hairs throughout.
Leaves:
Lower opposite, upper usually alternate, oblong-lanceolate, reduced above, 3-7 cm long, 1-1.5 cm wide, tips pointed, bases rounded, soft-hairy, margins short-hairy and somewhat toothed with short, awn-tipped, distant teeth.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a terminal leafy raceme, flowers erect in bud; petals egg-shaped, 6-9 mm long, pale purplish-rose, deeply notched; sepals 4-6 mm long, pointed; stigmas of 4 spreading lobes, not rolled under, about equalling the stamens.
Fruits:
Capsules, 3.5-6.5 cm long, nearly glabrous to downy-hairy; seeds 0.9-1 mm long, narrowly egg-shaped, rounded at base, brownish-red, densely and sharply pimpled.

Habitat and Range

Mesic to dry waste places in the lowland zone; rare in SW BC, known only from the lower Fraser Valley; introduced from Eurasia.
